The spark plugs are devices similar to glow plugs which are used in igniting the fuel on small combustion engines normally utilized in model aircraft, model cars and comparable applications. You should also see the mark on the camshaft poly is placed at 12 o’clock. If you don’t see any mark, remove the camshaft tapet cover. On the come shaft you need to rock number four cylinder and number one should be firing.
4. Loose the bolts that is holding the tension bearing . Look at the seals of the crankshaft and camshaft, tension bearings. If any of these parts are damaged, replace them so that the new timing belt won’t fail within a short span of time.
5. Remove the old timing belt and install the new one. Adjust and tension the timing belt according to the specifications provided by the manufacturer. Fit a new tapet cover gasket  and recheck the timing marks or turn the engine from the crankshat poly with spanner if the engine come to certain point and is not turning that mean your timing is not alright. You need to start the operation from scratch. Do not turn the engine turning the ignition key.
6. Place back all of the parts that you detached earlier including your car’s battery.
7. Start your engine and observe if the problems that your encountered before the replacement was done are still present.

Piston Ring Failure – Causes and Prevention

One of the major complaints that I have heard from many mechanics, and engine technicians, is that piston rings in heavy duty tractor engines wore out prematurely. I have heard this complaint many times. As per normal human responses, there is a quest to rationale the reasons as to why this component failed, as per the complaints from those in the field.

Not surprising, complaints of piston ring failure are blamed on the manufacturer of the rings. It’s not unusual to hear “Do not use these types of rings” and specific manufacturers are mentioned. However, I have heard these complaints about rings from OEM companies as well.

 My analysis led to several pertinent discoveries, especially after a particular customer asked for Original Caterpillar Piston Rings, not the rings presented to him. Little that that customer knows that the rings presented to him were manufactured by the same company that is on contract for Caterpillar. The first mistake that is made that contributes to major ring failure, is the seemingly economic benefit, of changing the piston rings only, however, the piston pin, piston pin retainer, and the cylinder liners are left in the used condition. These reused parts have clearances due to normal wear on the metal parts that contributes to slight but permanent vibrations within the entire engine. These almost invisible vibrations will lead to premature wear on all components, and most importantly, to the vibration of the rings on the piston head.

An engine with a 2800 rpm rating, with minor vibrations at that high speed, will have additional stress and strain on internal engine components. Other than the vibrations mentioned above, the used cylinder liner itself is damaged, with microscopic indentations, scratches, and worn out sections. This contributes to an uneven surface that the new piston rings have to move up and down in at 2800 rpm.

It’s this phenomenon that contributes to premature ring failure. Piston rings from original companies like Caterpillar and Cummins, will fail prematurely in this situations. Aftermarket piston rings from other reputable companies will fail prematurely in these situations. The problem is in reused cylinder liners, and not piston rings.

It’s not unusual therefore, that both OEM and aftermarket companies do not provide a warranty for rings that were changed without also changing the other internal components, namely the cylinder liner, piston, piston pin, and piston pin retainer.

While specific company warranty applies, most of them will consider this practice as voiding the warranty. The recommended thing to do, even though it’s a little more expensive, is to change all of the liner kits at the same time. Its more work, it’s a little more money, however, the results are better engine performance, less breakdown possibility, less fuel consumption, less pollution and GHG emissions, and the most important part, more peace of mind for the owner/manager.

How Ignition Systems Work

The Basics Of A Car Engine

In order to understand how your vehicle’s ignition system works we need to review the basics of internal combustion.

Basically, a car engine is like a large pump. Air and gas are being pumped in and exhaust is being pumped out. There is a by-product of excess energy that is being sent to the wheels and exhaust (which exits through the tailpipe). Your car’s engine combines the air and the fuel, and adds a spark. The spark ignites the air and fuel mixture to cause an explosion. This is what we refer to as ignition.

The ignition system is a group of components that work in tandem to create the ignition. The ignition system contains an ignition coil, a distributor, a distributor cap, a rotor, plug wires and spark plugs. Older ignition systems use what is called a “points-and-condenser system” in the distributor. Current ignition systems like the one your car most likely contains uses an ECU. An ECU or an engine control unit controls the spark and ignition timing.

Well take this apart piece by piece so it all makes sense.

1. Ignition Coil

The ignition coil takes the weak battery power and turns it into a spark that is powerful enough to ignite your fuel’s vapor. There are two coils of while in the ignition coil and they are right on top of each other called windings. The windings are differentiated as primary and secondary. The primary winding gathers the power to create a spark. The secondary winding sends it to the distributor.

There are three contacts on an ignition coil. If the ignition coil has an external plug, then the contacts are on the inside of the case. The large and obvious contact in the middle of the ignition coil is where the coil wire goes. The coil wire is the wire that links the ignition coil to the distributor cap. The second contact is a 12V wire that connects into a positive power source. The third contact sends information to the rest of the vehicle such as the tachometer.

2. The Distributor, Distributor Cap, and Rotor

As we mentioned above, your ignition coil links to the distributor via a coil wire. The distributor receives that powerful spark and sends it out to the spark plugs.

The distributor is a very precise spinner. It spins distributing the sparks to each of the spark plugs at the right time. The rotor, which is actually connected directly to the shaft of the distributor, is the mechanism that distributes the sparks. Since it’s connected to the distributor, the rotor also spins and makes contact with a number of points that correspond to the number of cylinders your engine has. Then, it sends the spark through the point to the plug wire located on the other end. Modern distributors use electronic assistance that is able to alter the ignition’s timing.

3. Spark Plugs & Wires

As we mentioned above, once the ignition coil creates the high-powered spark, the distributor and rotor takes that spark and spins it to the right outlet. However, we still need a way to transport that spark to the spark plug. This is done using spark plug wires.

The contact points on the distributor cap connect to a plug wire that takes the spark to the spark plugs. The end of the spark plug is located at the top of the cylinder and that’s where the action happens. Once the intake valve lets out just the right amount of fuel vapor and air in the cylinder, the spark plug creates a blue hot spark that ignites the mixture. This is what causes combustion. The ignition system does this thousands of times per minute.

4. The Ignition Module

Through an old system called “a points-and-condenser system”, a distributor relied on many of its own mechanics to time the spark at just the right time. The ignition points were set to a specific gap, which created the proper amount of spark while the condenser did the regulating.

Nowadays, all of this is handled by computers. This computer is called an ignition module. If it malfunctions, all you can do is replace it since it cannot be repaired.

 What is fuel – injection?

The advertisements on television talk about fuel – injection as if everyone knows exactly what the term means. But not everyone is a car mechanic even if they do recognize the term. So the first question is: What is fuel – injection? The second question is: Why should you care about keeping it running smoothly?

Obviously, by the name, you can tell a fuel – injection system handles getting fuel to the car engine. Despite being discussed as if it is a fairly new invention, it’s actually been in existence since the 1950s. The fuel – injection system was designed to address the need for fewer polluting emissions from cars and to supply fuel to the engine in a more efficient manner.

Going Modern

Fuel injection replaced the old-style carburetors and is combined with a catalytic converter where there are strict air quality standards. The catalytic converter changes dangerous emissions into harmless water vapor and carbon dioxide. But in order to accomplish this goal, the fuel must be supplied to the catalytic converter in the right mixture and amount.

Thus the fuel – injection system was born, and Mobile Car Care mechanics are thoroughly trained on both old and new styles. The fuel – injection system supplies the right air and fuel ratio to the engine. If a catalytic converter is on the car, the car emissions are rendered virtually harmless. But a catalytic converter is not required for the fuel – injection system to work properly.

There are two types of fuel – injection systems on the market now. The multipoint fuel – injection system has one fuel injector per cylinder. They are mounted on the intake manifold and use ignition voltage for operational power. There is a control module which contains a switch which turns the power on and off as the cylinders need fuel. Fuel is sprayed as needed to keep the engine running smoothly.

The second type of fuel – injection system is called a throttle body injection system. As the name suggest, fuel injector(s) are installed on the throttle body. The fuel is sprayed, mixes with the air, and then delivered to the cylinders by the intake manifold. This is a less efficient system and in areas where strict air emission control standards were put into place, the throttle body injection system was replaced by the multiport fuel – injection system during vehicle manufacturing.

Lifetime of Service

It is clear the fuel – injection – system plays an important role in the efficient operation of the vehicle. Most people are not qualified nor have the right diagnostic tools to test and maintain a fuel -injection system. Yet it is critical to keep your fuel – injection – systems working efficiently for the benefit of the engine and to meet air emission standards.

Maintenance of the fuel – injection system can prevent many problems from developing.

* Change the fuel filter periodically
* Clean fuel injectors
* Fuel flow testing
* Spray pattern testing

Your car’s engine, on the other hand, is among the few assemblies (your transmission is the other one) where a failure can crush your budget.

Your engine will not last forever, of course. Depending on how hard you drive it and the number of miles you put on it, you can expect it to last between 100,000 miles and twice that amount. If you keep your vehicle long enough, it will eventually develop major problems.

Below, we’ll explore the decision to fix the assembly versus having it replaced. We’ll explain why uncovering the root causes of a given problem is a critical piece to making this decision. Lastly, we’ll describe the key differences between a brand new engine and a remanufactured unit.

Deciding Whether To Repair The Assembly

Suppose your vehicle is eight or nine years old and you’ve driven it extremely hard over those years. As a result, your engine has finally failed. The first question to ask is whether you should keep your car, or retire it and buy a new one. A lot depends on its age, value, and overall condition.

For example, if your car has a market value of $2,500, spending over $1,000 to have your engine repaired (or replaced) may make little sense. But if your vehicle has retained its value and other major components (e.g. transmission) remain in good shape, spending the money might be worthwhile.

Let’s suppose you have decided to keep your car. Now, the question becomes whether you should have the failing engine repaired or replaced. Your decision will largely hinge on its condition and the number of miles on it.

For example, if the assembly has 130,000 miles, a history of valve or piston problems, and a chronic misfire, repairing it will be costly. The mechanic might need to perform extensive work on the cylinders. He may need to align the engine block and replace the valves.

Also, with an overhaul, the entire assembly must be dismantled. The individual pieces are disassembled, so the mechanic can check for blemishes, fissures, or other structural problems. The components that are in good condition are then cleaned. The ones that are in poor condition are replaced. Once the parts have either been cleaned or replaced, the assembly is put back together.

This is painstaking work. An engine overhaul requires an enormous amount of time and effort. This is the reason a lot of mechanics will strongly suggest having the engine replaced.

Differences Between New And Remanufactured Engines

You can buy a used assembly from a junkyard, but doing so may be dangerous. There’s no way to be certain whether there are problems hidden from view, especially with engines that have a lot of miles. Even if you find a used assembly with low miles and a limited warranty, it will usually be a less-than-ideal option. The price will be consistent with a remanufactured unit, which will have been brought up to OEM standards. At that point, you’re better off investing in the latter.

A new engine is exactly how it sounds. Every individual piece is new. The valves, pistons, engine block, connecting rods, and other parts have never been used.

A remanufactured unit is nearly as good (and far less expensive). Remans are used assemblies that have been dismantled, closely examined, and carefully cleaned. Most of the pieces that wear over time (e.g. timing belt, gaskets, etc.) are replaced. Then, the assembly is rebuilt and tested to ensure it meets OEM standards.

Which option is best? If your budget is limited, a remanufactured engine that has been brought up to OEM specifications is an ideal solution. It will get your car back on the road without the high cost associated with a new assembly.
